Toku Week In Review (6/23/2013)

Another week, another batch of tokusatsu news! This week, more information on the Kikaider revival project is revealed, a new trailer for the live action adaptations of Gatchaman and Tiger Mask are released online, toys galore, a familiar face joins the Kamen Rider Wizard movie and more! Hit the jump for all the toku news you can handle.

KIKAIDER REVIVAL PROJECT TO BE A THEATRICAL FILM

Earlier this year, when Super Hero War Z was released, the film ended with a tease of a "Kikaider Revival Project" sometime this year. Now we know that this project will be a movie, as revealed by a listing on CDJapan for a novelization written by Keisuke Sawamura. The movie will premiere this Fall, but aside from that there has been no word on whether or not this will be a sequel like last year's Gavan movie or a remake. Keep checking in as more news comes out throughout the next few months.

FULL GATCHAMAN MOVIE TRAILER ARRIVES

[Courtesy of YouTube user movieclipsTRAILERS]

The first full trailer for the live-action, big-budgeted adaptation of Tatsunoko's legendary superhero anime Kagaku Ninja-tai Gatchaman (simply called Gatchaman) was released online and caught the world's attention. The film is a more serious take on the franchise that was released in the US, heavily altered, as both Battle of the Planets and G-Force. The film stars Tori Matsuzaka (of Samurai Sentai Shinkenger fame) as Ken Washio, the leader of the special ninja team Gatchaman. The five warriors chosen by Dr. Nambu must take on the evil forces of Galactor and their commander Berg Katse.

The film is directed by Toya Sato (Kaiji, Gokusen, live action Grave of the Fireflies), written by Yusuke Watanabe (Dragon Ball Z The Movie: Battle of the Gods, 20th Century Boys), and also stars Ayame Gouriki as Jun, Ryohei Suzuki as Ryu, Gou Ayano as Jo, and Tatsuomi Hamada as Jinpei. The film will be released on August 24th.

THE TIGER MASK TRAILER AIRS SAME WEEK AS GATCHAMAN'S, NO ONE CARES

Okay, that headline is a bit mean, but it's true. The first teaser for the live-action adaptation of Tiger Mask was also released this week but to much less fanfare. The film is a re-imagining of the manga written and drawn by Ikki Kajiwara and Naoki Tsuji. In the film, instead of being a wrestler who fights evil wrestlers sent by an organization, he is now a transforming superhero. The film stars Eiji Wentz (Live action Gegege no Kitaro, Kamen Rider: The First) as Naoto Date aka Tiger Mask, who was trained by this evil organization but rebels against them when he chooses to fight for an orphanage.

The Tiger Mask also stars Natsuna Watanabe (live action GANTZ, live action Kimi ni Todoke) and Show Aikawa (Zebraman, Dead or Alive) and is written and directed by Ken Ochiai, making his feature length movie debut. The film will be theatrically released this November, but its world premiere is next month.

KAMEN RIDER WIZARD IN MAGIC LAND ADDS RYUJI SAINEI TO THE CAST

Tokusatsu veteran Ryuji Sainei is the newest addition to the cast of this summer's Kamen Rider movie: Kamen Rider Wizard In Magic Land: The Movie. Ryuji Sainei is best known for playing Akaza Banban/DekaRed in the 2004 Super Sentai Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger. He has reprised the role in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, Hikonin Sentai Akibaranger and even voiced the SPD Red Ranger in the Japanese dub of Power Rangers SPD.

In the film, Sainei will be playing the captain of the Imperial Guards and also has the ability to transform into Kamen Rider Mage. However, he is one of the more elite users of the belt and will probably be one of Haruto's tougher challenges.

Other information on the film was announced this week, including more details and returning characters from the series. As seen above, the three Phantom commanders will all make an appearance in the film somehow. How? Gotta watch the movie and find out...
